Belarus, Russia remain committed to Union State Treaty

Belarus and Russia remain committed to the Union State Treaty, Belarusian head of state Alexander Lukashenko said on June 22, summing up the results of the talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. “The President of Russia confirmed his commitment to the Union State Treaty: this document is working, neither the Belarusian nor the Russian sides are giving up on it. It is vitally important and attests to the continuity of the policy that has been pursued by the Russian Federation all this time. Belarus will certainly follow this policy, too,” Alexander Lukashenko underlined. According to him, the Brest talks gave the Presidents an opportunity to discuss many particular issues related to economy and equal rights of the Belarusians and Russians. “I appreciate that the Russian side ratified the documents that had been signed in Saint Petersburg. Almost all the issues concerning the rights of the citizens have been settled: our nations will never be foreigners for each other,”, the head of state said. Alexander Lukashenko added that “the last eight years that we have worked with the Russian side was a period of a significant advance.” “It is proved by the rise in living standards in Belarus and Russia. There are still many issues, but the life of both the Russians and Belarusians got better, nobody can deny it. I remember the time when the Soviet Union collapsed and our countries lost guiding lines, there seemed to be no light at the end of the tunnel. But we got over it. The assessment given by the new Russian President was important for me, and we understood clearly: we have created a solid base to move on,” the head of state said. The President of Belarus noted that, probably, some agreements failed or certain issues were solved with delay or tackled too early, but there are some very symbolic, crucial issues that are to be settled: it pertains to political, economic and military and technical areas.
