Belarus exploring new economic mechanisms for rural development

MINSK, 11 March (BelTA) – The government discusses the issues of economic development of rural areas together with agriculture specialists

MINSK, 11 March (BelTA) – The government discusses the issues of economic development of rural areas together with agriculture specialists, BelTA has learnt.

Belarus needs to adopt measures that will not only help improve mechanisms of economic management of rural area, but, in general, will be useful for production and service organizations working in the agricultural sector.

«The president decided to hold a kind of a plenary meeting to discuss the ways to improve the effectiveness of rural economy and reduce the influence of subjective factors on agricultural production,» Prime Minister Mikhail Myasnikovich said.

The head of government noted that almost everywhere the agricultural sector is subsidized by the state: in prosperous Europe, in rich America, and in not-so-rich India. The practice is also popular with other countries including those that have better natural and climatic conditions than Belarus.

«In this regard we have developed a number of documents that will be finalized in the near future,» the Prime Minister said. The documents are being prepared by a special inter-ministerial group headed by Mikhail Myasnikovich. It is expected to develop specific measures that will help increase profit and improve economic soundness of agricultural sector, reduce production costs, debts and financial insolvency of enterprises, and develop livestock breeding and seed farming.

According to the Prime Minister, today many issues, like mechanisms of lending, state procurement contracts, etc., should be revised. «The new economic mechanism should give people working in rural area decent salaries. The main thing is to continue developing. Today we cannot stop developing since our economy is open and should be highly competitive,» Mikhail Myasnikovich emphasized.

According to the Prime Minister, the special group is working to find new ways to solve matters of price parity and several other issues of importance.
