Foreign trade of Grodno Oblast with Russia projected at $1.5bn in 2013

GRODNO, 9 October (BelTA) – In 2013 the foreign trade of Grodno Oblast with Russia is expected to total $1.5 billion, Chairman of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee Semyon Shapiro told a press conference for Russian journalists, BelTA has learnt.

Major exports to the Russian Federation are meat and dairy products. They account for more than 45% of the total exports. "All dairy and meat-packing plants manufacture the products of the highest quality," said the Governor.

Most popular in the Russian market are the brands of the meat and dairy plants from Grodno, Lida, Novogrudok and Oshmiany. Grodno Oblast also exports products of light industry and wood processing, construction materials to Russia. In January-July 2013 Grodno Oblast’s export to Russia increased by 15% to total nearly $790 million.

In order to strengthen the positions in the Russian market and increase sales local producers participate in exhibitions in Russia. In 2013, Grodno producers took part in three fairs: Grodno Oblast to Muscovites, Belarusian Kaleidoscope in Russian cities of Desnogorsk and Vologda.

Grodno Oblast is home to 212 companies with a share of Russian capital. Russian businessmen invest mostly in trade and catering, manufacture of products from plastic, paper and cardboard, wood processing. For example, Liplast-SPb in Lida produces children’s playgrounds from fiberglass, chairs for stadiums, sports helmets, and parts for railroad cars. Enarg manufactures ice cream. Alsem is engaged in the construction and operation of shopping centers, Neman-Alloy produces special-purpose footwear.

Grodno Oblast and Russian regions have signed 21 agreements on trade and economic, scientific-technical and cultural cooperation. In September Lida District signed an agreement on cooperation with Kaliningrad Oblast. Kaluga Oblast is interested in Grodno experience in road construction and local housing and utility sector. This year, the region hosted business delegations from Voronezh and Kursk Oblasts.

The press conference with Grodno Oblast Governor Semyon Shapiro was held as part of the mass media tour for Russian reporters. The tour gathered over 80 reporters from 60 federal and regional Russian media. The mass media tour for Russian reporters is meant to highlight topical aspects of Belarus-Russia cooperation. On 8 October the reporters visited the Grodno-based enterprise SOOO Conte Spa, the Grodno Oblast Heart Clinic, the agricultural enterprise Obukhovo, the dairy farm Batorovka, the agricultural enterprise Progress, the farm tourism estate Tyzenhaus Country Mansion in Karolino. On 9 October the reporters are in Lida.
