Minsk Oblast to host first sailing festival From Varagians to Greeks

The festival aims to restore sailing traditions of people living in the 9th-11th centuries

The first international sailing festival of early medieval culture From Varagians to Greeks will take place in Minsk Oblast on 21-27 September, BelTA learned from one of the organizers of the festival Pavel Dorofei.

The festival aims to restore sailing traditions of people living in the 9th-11th centuries. Partaking in the event will be restored medieval ships from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.

The expedition will start in the town of Berezovka and will proceed to Mosty and Grodno. These towns will host cultural events featuring medieval culture of Eastern Slavs, Baltic people and Vikings. Participants of the sailing expedition will organize various exhibitions of early medieval culture. The festival will include fairs, master classes and a fire show. Guests of the festival will enjoy performances of the Minsk folk band Hard Wood (in Berezovka), the Ukrainian band Spiritual Seasons (in Grodno).

The race will kick off in Berezovka on 21 September. On 24 September the ships will anchor in Mosty. On 27 September they will arrive in Grodno.

There are plans to hold such festivals every year exploring different routes.
