Climate change's effect on Belarusian agriculture explained

It is now easier to grow heat-loving plants in Belarus, BelTA learned from Tatiana Chetyrko, Head of the Weather Forecast Service of the National Center for Hydrometeorology, Radioactive Contamination Control, and Environmental Monitoring (Belhydromet) of the Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry.

Tatiana Chetyrko said: “Agrometeorologists are already saying that a new agroclimatic zone is appearing in the territory of our country. It is favorable for more heat-loving plants. Melons and gourds are already grown successfully in Gomel Oblast. On the whole, stone fruits are grown successfully in Belarus' south. At the same time we see more frequent droughts in southern parts of the country due to the warmer climate. It may have a negative effect on the development of agriculture.”

The official also remarked that Belhydromet actively cooperates with the Agriculture and Food Ministry. “We provide weather forecasts and agrometeorological forecasts. We share our vision regarding the development of agricultural crops. We give recommendations,” Tatiana Chetyrko said.
